In spite of intensive economic development, regional and gender inequality in Turkey is growing. Income gap between rural and urban population is widening. One of the key causes of inequality is unequal access to the resources such as financial capital, quality education and basic health services for different social groups. Children from affluent social classes have more chances to receive high quality education and well-paid job.The tax system, unemployment insurance scheme, social security programmes are aimed at reducing inequality and poverty eradication. The Turkish government also implements special programmes to develop the backward eastern regions. However, the analysis demonstrates that a reduction of government subsidies in the agricultural sector that was not supported by the investments is one of the causes of the rural areas relative poverty.According to the author inequality can be reduced by launching special programmes for people employed in the informal sector. It is also important to reform the tax system, as its distribution effect is limited given that it relies on the regressive consumption tax while the progressive taxes on income make up only a small share of the total taxes. One of the important measures to reduce inequality should be improving access to education for the vulnerable social groups.
