However, cooperation in this field is often limited by the lowest common denominator of mutual deterrence and crisis management. New opportunities may be opened by a more active involvement in this process of the EU and the G8. This chapter takes stock of the key problems and contradictions of safeguarding of international peace and security and examines the history and future prospects of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU.
